The tiny two-door Smart is back on the market. The all-electric Smart #2 has gone on sale in China, where the Premium version costs 99,900 yuan (about $14,900), CarNewsChina reports. It is the brand’s return to the ultra-compact two-seater format that made the original Fortwo a fixture of crowded city streets.

Smart, now a joint venture of Geely and Mercedes-Benz, showed the production car at the Paris Motor Show in October. The location was symbolic: the first Smart was presented in Paris beneath the Louvre pyramid in 1996. The new car was styled by the Mercedes-Benz design team and keeps the familiar look with a wheel at each corner and short overhangs, but it rides on a new platform called ECA (Electric Compact Architecture) and uses the next generation of the Tridion safety cell, now named Tridion Cell Evo.

The rear wheels are driven by a single 60 kW motor, and the battery is a 35.8 kWh LFP pack, which CarNewsChina says comes from CATL. In China the car is rated for 410 km on the lenient CLTC cycle. Smart’s own target for Europe is 290 km WLTP, with DC charging at up to 65 kW taking the battery from 10 to 80% in about 20 minutes.

Inside there is a bench-style seat and an S-shaped dashboard, with a 12.8-inch central touchscreen and an 8.8-inch digital cluster in the Chinese car. A split tailgate lets you open only the upper glass section in tight spaces, while the lower part folds down into a loading shelf or a seat that holds up to 120 kg.

Smart also built a limited Couture Edition with a matte white body and a gold roof, capped at 999 units for China and another 999 for Europe. According to CarNewsChina, the Chinese allocation is already sold out.

European buyers will have to wait a little longer. Smart says early ordering is opening in both markets, with Pure, Pure+ and Premium trims planned for Europe, but local prices and specifications have not been announced yet.
