Android XR’s app tools are now stable, opening the door to more apps for XREAL Aura

Smart glasses live or die by their apps, and Google has removed one of the excuses developers had for waiting. The core tools for building Android XR software have left beta, so studios can now ship apps for headsets and glasses on stable libraries instead of preview code.
The first hardware to benefit is XREAL Aura, which Google calls the first wired XR glasses running Android XR. The glasses weigh under 95 grams and connect to a separate pocket-sized compute unit, and because the system is built on Android, ordinary Android apps run on them from the first day.
What changed is mostly under the hood. The main Jetpack XR libraries, including SceneCore for placing 3D content, ARCore for Jetpack XR for understanding the room, and XR Runtime for managing sessions, are now stable, as are the Android XR emulators in Android Studio, which let developers test layouts for glasses without owning a pair. The Geospatial APIs, which pin digital content to real-world coordinates, also reached stable, a step toward directions or labels that appear over the street itself.
Game studios get the Android XR Engine Hub for Unity, Godot and Unreal Engine, now also stable, with ready-made project settings and tools for checking frame budgets and heat limits. Contract XR has already ported its Unity puzzle game Jigsaw Night to Aura, letting several players walk around and pass pieces to each other. For glasses where the main interface is a voice, Google added on-device text-to-speech in ML Kit and guidance for apps built around audio and Gemini Nano.
The timing tracks Google’s roadmap: the same libraries only reached beta in August. Stable tools don’t guarantee a flood of apps, but they remove the risk of building on code that might change, which is what larger developers usually wait for.
