Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is heading back to cinemas. Universal Pictures said the film will return to more than 1,000 screens in the US and Canada on Friday, December 11, 2026, in every format, IMAX 70mm included.

It is an unusual move for a film that opened back on July 17 and has already broken a string of records. According to the studio, the Homer adaptation has earned $626 million in North America, $1.175 billion abroad and $1.80 billion worldwide.

A record-heavy run

Those figures make it the highest-grossing film in both Nolan’s career and Universal’s history. The studio also lists it as the biggest R-rated film ever worldwide, IMAX’s biggest title to date and the 10th highest-grossing MPA film of all time. It is still playing outside North America, where it recently passed Furious 7 as Universal’s top international release.

Part of the appeal is technical. The Odyssey is the first feature shot entirely with IMAX film cameras,. The cast is led by Matt Damon, with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo and Zendaya.

A short window before the December rush

The timing is tight. As IGN points out, Dune: Part Three takes over premium screens on December 18, and Avengers: Doomsday also arrives in December, so it is unclear how long the IMAX run will last. The re-release also lands as awards season heats up, with the film widely expected to compete for Best Picture, and shortly before its home video debut later in November.

For anyone who skipped it in summer, this may be the last chance to see the film on the format Nolan shot it for.
